Quaker Hill and its Environs

Quaker Hill was settled about 1720 by five Quaker families from Rhode Island.  The community flourished from 1728 to 1835.  Although there are still decedents living in the Pawling area, the Hittite Quakers are gone except a handful.

In the later 19th Century a new group of people began to inhabit the Quaker Hill area.  Throughout much of the 19th Century, many of note lived in the environs.  Lowell Thomas changed the landscape and the society more than anyone else.

Today Quaker Hill resembles a typical residential community.  Yet Pawling is not typical in many ways.  America’s early history played out here.  Some feel the spirit energy of the past.  The residents today are engaged with each other and the world at large.
